The TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) or RDKS (Reifen Druck Kontroll Systeme) is an electronic system, which monitors the vehicle tyre pressure continuously. When the pressure sinks 25% lower than the pre-set value, the driver is immediately notified. The tyres on wheels with constantly low pressure overheat and become prematurely worn, which may cause accidents, increases the fuel consumption and with it, the emission of dangerous substances. The sensor has been made mandatory by the EC 661/2009 Regulation which covers all vehicles suitable for passenger transport (with max. 8 seats), including trailers. Vehicles of the above mentioned types manufactured after November 1st 2014 must contain a factory installed TPMS tyre pressure monitoring system. TPMS is also checked in the course of a vehicle inspection. Depending on your location, a faulty TPMS may be even a reason for failing the inspection. TPMS systems can be divided in two groups - one is the indirect, which operates in coordination with the ABS sensors, based on the wheel rotation. The disadvantage of this method is the insufficient accuracy, the tyre pressure monitor resetting has to be performed manually. The direct method includes calibrated sensors that are built into the wheels, communicating with the central receiver of the vehicle, there is no need for manual setting, and the reported data is constantly precise. Repairs and servicing of the tyres equipped with the TPMS system require additional knowledge and special tools. One of the most important tools are the diagnostics, which can determine the correct function of the sensor. After repairing or replacing a defect sensor or valve the new sensor has to be calibrated and the system has to be programmed, which can not be done without a suitable diagnostic and calibrating tool.
